The last days of the school year are coming up quickly.

We remember how excited we were as kids knowing that the summer break was coming up. We also know as parents that this time of year brings with it new stresses as well.

If we could, we would take that stress away. What we can do is offer some suggestions to help you plan ahead for a summer of healthy smiles.

You want your family to keep their mouths as cavity-free as possible. At the office of Dr. Hugh B. Rosenblatt, we want the same thing for all the families in Boynton Beach, FL. If a problem does arise, just know that we are a phone call away. You can reach us at (561) 877-3802.

With that in mind, let’s look at some things you can do to make the summer happy and healthy for your family.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

Your kids are probably happy they don’t have homework to do during the summer months. But this is a great opportunity for you as well.

By scheduling dental cleanings and exams now, your kids won’t have to miss any classes to keep their smiles looking great.

If you read our blog regularly, then you already understand that routine dental care is important. This includes daily brushing and flossing, but it also should include professional cleanings a couple times each year. You already know that kids may not always brush as well as they should.

By scheduling a checkup with our dental professionals, you can feel confident that cavity-causing plaque and tartar have been removed from your children’s teeth.

If your child does develop a cavity, then regular checkups are even more important. We would much rather find those problems early, so we can treat them before you leave for your family vacation. You don’t want a toothache to spoil your family trip.

Snack Healthy

Another good way to avoid cavities is to plan ahead when it comes to snacks. We know that kids can eat like there’s no tomorrow. We also know that kids will eat more sweets than they should if they are given the chance to do so.

We aren’t saying you should never treat your kids or yourself to an ice cream sundae. We are saying that eating sundaes every day probably isn’t the best idea for your oral health.

For this reason, we encourage you to plan ahead and keep healthy snacks in the house for your kids. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts (as long as your children are not allergic) are better options than candy, cookies, and cake. Dairy products like yogurt (be sure to check the sugar content), milk, and cheese can be good options as well.

Brushing and flossing are for cleaning teeth after your kids eat, but what goes in their mouths is equally important.

Drink Water

We know that many kids enjoy playing sports during the summer. And as a parent, you will be there to cheer your kids on no matter what sport they are playing.

For better or worse, many people have come to believe that sports drinks are an essential part of those activities. You may not realize or may not have noticed, but many of these drinks can have as much or more sugar in one bottle than you would get from eating a candy bar.

For that reason, we would recommend drinking water more often than not. Water will keep your kids from getting dehydrated without the sugar.

And based on our own experience, ice-cold water tastes pretty cold when someone has worked up a sweat.

Have a Happy & Healthy Summer

No matter what your summer plans are, we hope you and your family create a lot of joyful memories in the months ahead. As you are taking pictures, we also hope everyone in your family will be flashing healthy smiles as well.

And we hope you will visit Dr. Rosenblatt’s office this summer so we can hear all about how much fun you’ve been having. To request your next appointment, fill out our online form or call (561) 877-3802.
