Whether you play football, volleyball, surfing, soccer, or anything else, sports are a great way to stay active and in shape.
As fun as sports can be, most of us have had a twisted ankle or a sprained wrist at one time or another. We understand that just part of the deal that comes with playing the game.
Dental injuries are possible, too, and a broken or knocked-out tooth should be considered a dental emergency . This is why we want you to remind you to save this phone number — 561-877-3802 — if you are in or near Boynton Beach, FL.
That’s how you can reach the office of Hugh B. Rosenblatt, DMD, where you can receive emergency dental care.
Please, keep in mind that you should wear vinyl or latex gloves whenever you are helping anyone with a dental emergency.
It only takes a fraction of a second. Taking your eye off the ball. Getting distracted. Not being aware of your surroundings.
You can get hit or run into something on the field or when you are out for a jog. Before you realize what’s happened, you could be grabbing your mouth in pain, and someone could be asking, “Is that your tooth?”
Traumatic injuries can cause teeth to become avulsed (or removed from their sockets) or to break. If this happens, you will likely be bleeding, too.
If possible find the tooth or the pieces of the tooth. Pick it up by the crown, not the root. You will want to rinse the tooth as well as your mouth. If you continue bleeding, apply clean gauze to the area. Repeat rinsing and using gauze as needed until the bleeding stops.
For a broken tooth, you should cover the tooth with gauze, dental wax, or sugar-free gum. This is to prevent you from accidentally cutting your lip, cheeks, or tongue. The edges of broken teeth can be surprisingly sharp.
For a tooth that’s been knocked out, first try to place it back in its socket. Leave it there until you can see a dentist if it will stay in place. If the tooth falls out, you should store it in milk (not water) until you are able to see a dentist. In some cases, it is possible to save a tooth.
To deal with the pain or swelling, considered taking a pain reliever and applying a cold pack to the affected area.
Once we have addressed the pain, Dr. Rosenblatt can discuss your options for repairing or replacing your tooth.
Accidents happen. No one wants them to happen, but they do.
This is why we have seat belts and airbags in our vehicles. It’s also why sports have specific protective gear depending on the risks of those sports.
It’s also why you should be wearing an athletic mouthguard for almost any sport you might play. A comfortable mouthguard that isn’t too bulky provides the best protection for your teeth. This is why we make custom-fitted mouthguards as part of our general dentistry .
We will gladly make one for all the athletes in your family.
We hope you will enjoy playing sports for many years to come. We also hope you avoid serious injuries by staying alert and by wearing a mouthguard that fits you.
If something does happen, just remember that Dr. Rosenblatt and our team in Boynton Beach, FL are ready to answer your call. Just dial 561-877-3802.
