Causes Of Dental Anxiety

Millions of people are affected by dental anxiety. If you are one of them, you are definitely not alone. Just as important, everyone at Dr. Rosenblatt’s office is one your side. We want to make it easier for you to receive the dental care that you need.

The first step for many patients is understanding the cause of their dental anxiety. There’s even a website — www.dentalfearcentral.org — that may help you better understand what makes you anxious.

The site was created by people with dental anxiety to help other patients with dental anxiety. The causes of fear can vary from patient to patient. If you can identify the causes of your anxiety, it can allow us to better address those concerns.

Some common causes of dental anxiety include the following:

▸ Fear that the dentist with “lecture” you

▸ Fear that dental care will be painful

▸ Fear that a needle, drill, or another piece of equipment will be used

▸ Fear that you will gag

These are just a few of the common reasons we have heard that patients are anxious about dental treatment. If you previously had a bad experience with a dentist, this can add to your anxiety.

We think you will see how dental care can be handled respectfully and gently if you give a chance to our dentist office in Boynton Beach, FL.

Managing Dental Anxiety

The people behind Dental Fear Central recommend three steps that can help you manage your anxiety.

First, a psychological approach can help. Second, technology can make dental care easier. And third, dental sedation can make a big difference in your dental experience.

Let’s take these one at a time, so we can discuss how they apply to our practice.

✦ Psychological approach

When you come to our office, we want you to feel like you are visiting close friends or family. We will do everything we to help you feel at home.

This belief affects how we treat every patient who comes to see us. It’s also why will do what we can to help you feel cozy and comfortable. We will be happy to provide you with a pillow, blanket, or both. We can also provide you with bottled water.

We have learned that these create comforts can go a long way toward helping some patients stay relaxed.

✦ Technological approach

This is something that we can use with the comfort options mentioned above. In addition to a blanket and pillow, some patients enjoy watching television or listening to music as a distraction during their cleanings or other procedures.

But technology also includes many advances that have been made in modern dentistry. Digital x-rays use a fraction of the radiation that film x-rays once did, and new tools and techniques allow us to perform many procedures with practically no pain whatsoever.

Our goal is to prevent or eliminate any pain you may already be experiencing. The last thing we want is to cause you additional discomfort.

✦ Sedation approach

And if all else fails, then we can always use dental sedation. With sedation dentistry, you won’t feel any pain. You won’t gag. And many times, you won’t remember most of your treatment — if you have any memory at all.

With nitrous oxide, all you have to do is inhale the gas and drift into a relaxed and comfortable state until your treatment is done. With oral sedation, you simply take some medication, then let someone else bring you to and from the dentist office.
